tourism-Western-australiaThe 2014 Perth International Arts Festival will open with explosions of fireworks, music and movement tonight with the first performance of the Lotterywest Festival Spectacular Veles e Vents at Langley Park.

The opening performance, an Australian exclusive by Xarxa Teatre from Spain, will set the Perth skyline alight as it charts the grand and perilous voyage of a ship on the open sea.

Premier Colin Barnett said the Lotterywest Festival Spectacular, proudly supported by the State Government through Lotterywest and Eventscorp, would be an extraordinary performance.

“Being held over three consecutive nights for the first time, this free and family friendly event offers West Australians a chance to experience world-class art and theatre in spectacular style,” Mr Barnett said.

Tourism Minister Liza Harvey said Veles e Vents was expected to attract tens of thousands of people and would further highlight Perth’s thriving arts and cultural scene.

“Xarxa Teatre has performed at popular festivals and events all around the world, and it is a great coup to have them in Western Australia to open the 2014 Perth International Arts Festival,” Mrs Harvey said.

The 2014 Perth International Arts Festival, held from February 7 to March 1, is the oldest annual international multi-arts festival in the southern hemisphere.

About 500,000 patrons are expected to attend the variety of local and international theatre, music, film, arts, literature and free community events on offer.
