Mandurah hosts thousands for IRONMAN 70.3

tourism-Western-australia (1)A high-quality field of more than 2,000 competitors will this weekend take on the challenging SunSmart IRONMAN 70.3 Mandurah.Acting Tourism Minister John Day said the popular Australian Pro Championship, now in its second year, had attracted competitors from Australia and around the world, including countries such as Singapore, the United Kingdom, Indonesia, Ireland, Germany, New Zealand and the United States.

“With US$50,000 prize money, 40 qualifying places for the IRONMAN 70.3 World Championship in Quebec, Canada and, for the first time, 30 age-group qualifying spots for the 2014 IRONMAN World Championship in Kona, Hawaii, the competition will be fierce,” Mr Day said.“The event takes competitors on a challenging 1.9km swim, 90km cycle and a 21.1km run over a course that highlights Mandurah’s stunning waterways, foreshore and city centre.

“By attracting thousands of competitors and spectators to Mandurah, the event also adds vibrancy to the city and provides an economic boost to local businesses.”The SunSmart IRONMAN 70.3 Mandurah is proudly supported by the State Government through Eventscorp’s Regional Events Program, funded by Royalties for Regions.Regional Development Minister Brendon Grylls said it was great to see this event being staged in Mandurah.

“Royalties for Regions funding has significantly increased the number and calibre of regional events, such as this, across the State, providing significant social and economic benefits to regional communities throughout Western Australia,” Mr Grylls said.“Mandurah is already an exciting place to live, work and visit, and the SunSmart IRONMAN 70.3 Mandurah provides an opportunity to show off this fantastic city to thousands of people.”
