KiwiRail and Greater Wellington Regional Council have been advised by the manufacturer of the Matangi trains that the fleet requires an immediate precautionary inspection. The inspection is to check that the roll pin on a locking nut on the inter-car coupler is correctly aligned. To do this the Matangi fleet has been taken out of service and they are currently being inspected, and any repairs undertaken, by KiwiRail’s mechanical team in Wellington.
These inspections will continue into the evening and, as a result, there will be a half hourly timetable with reduced seating for this evening’s peak services. In addition, buses will run express to Porirua and Waterloo stations. These buses will not run to a timetable and will leave platform 9 at Wellington Railway Station once full. A half hourly bus service will replace trains on the Johnsonville Line for the rest of the day and Melling services will be replaced by bus between Petone and Melling.
