Mr Pearce said the NSW Government, through the tourism and major events agency Destination NSW, is proud to support Tropfest 2013, the world’s largest short film festival.

“Tropfest is a launch pad for new and experienced film makers of all ages and having a film screened at Tropfest can be the start of a very exciting career for emerging film makers,” he said.

“I am proud that 12 of the 16 Tropfest 2013 finalists come from NSW, reflecting our position as the centre of film production in Australia and home of the creative industries.”

Mr Pearce said NSW employs more than 45 per cent of film industry practitioners and is the headquarters for more than half of Australia’s film businesses.

“Thirty-seven per cent of Australia’s creative industries are based in NSW, with more than 170,000 people across the State directly employed in this sector in the areas of film, music, design and fashion,” he said.

“Tropfest has a long history of success in Sydney, and is one of the key film events the NSW Government supports. It is also an important feature on the NSW Events Calendar, developed by Destination NSW.

“The event joins a number of other fantastic free outdoor events in Sydney including Sydney New Year’s Eve, Sydney Festival and Sydney Mardi Gras Parade.

“Tropfest 2013 will take place at Sydney’s Domain on Sunday 17th February, with finalist’s films screened to an expected national audience of more than 150,000 people in the Domain and at live sites across Australia, and also shown live on SBS.

“I would like to wish all finalists the best of luck and I look forward to viewing their films and enjoying a wonderful Sydney summer evening in the Domain at Tropfest 2013.”
