The Mombasa and Coast Tourism Association have urged Western embassies to cancel travel advisories to their citizens against visiting Mombasa, because the advisories have affected negatively on tourism in the region.
Mohammed Hersi, MCTA chairman dismissed the directives saying Mombasa is safe. He said that security challenges are global and both the national and the Mombasa county governments have done their best to guarantee the city is safe.
Hersi also said, “The UN and western embassies should be in the forefront in encouraging visitors to Mombasa but what they are doing is “killing” tourism in the coastal region. We want to say Mombasa is safe and people should come for Easter and enjoy themselves.”
He added the United States of America was attacked by terrorists in the September 11, 2001, yet no one has been discouraged from travelling to New York. “They have discouraged even their staff from travelling down to the Coast.”
