logo-southamptonLocal MP for Eastleigh, Mike Thornton, is to go back to the floor at Southampton Airport on Friday 4th April as part of English Tourism Week.

Mike will be shadowing the Airport Duty Manager and Airport Ambassadors, getting a feel for the day-to-day operations of the airport and delivering excellent customer service to passengers.

Southampton Airport is famous for its levels of customer service and the team are keen for Mike to experience this first hand.

In fact, it has been the top performing airport in the UK over the last 12 months according to the independent Airport Service Quality industry survey.

Furthermore, Which? readers consistently voted Southampton Airport as one of the few 5 star airports in the UK – particularly in terms of check-in desk waiting times, bag drop waiting times, passport control and airport design.

Celebrating the quality and vibrancy of England’s visitor experiences and the value that the industry brings to the nation, English Tourism Week is a week-long celebration of events to kick start the main tourism season.

Jan Halliday, Director of Marketing & Communications, said: “Southampton Airport is working hard with a number of partners in the county to grow the amount of inbound tourists coming through the airport.

We feel that this region has so much to offer people arriving from overseas and other parts of the UK. World-class attractions such as the new Mary Rose Museum at Portsmouth Historic Dockyard, the developments at the Ageas Bowl, Peppa Pig World at Paultons Park, SeaCity Museum, Beaulieu, the New Forest and the city of Winchester make this area a fantastic English tourist destination.”

Mike Thornton, MP for Eastleigh commented ““I’m delighted to be visiting Southampton Airport – a vital gateway for the region’s tourism industry – to help celebrate English Tourism Week 2014.

I’m looking forward to meeting some of the industry’s employees and learning more about the lengths they go to in order to ensure excellent customer service.

Tourism is big business here in Hampshire, supporting over 45,000 jobs and contributing £2.5 billion to the local economy, so it is quite right that we celebrate this ever- growing local industry.

Whether it’s taking a stroll through Itchen Valley Country Park, sailing at Hamble Marina or exploring the ‘Strawberry Coast’ at Hamble Valley, Hampshire, and in particular Eastleigh Borough, has lots to offer.”
