MSC-CruisesOn Thursday, 24 October 2013, under the patronage of Comune di Genoa and Regione Liguria, MSC Cruises held a star-studded event in Genoa, Italy, on board the beautiful MSC Opera, raising money for Italian associations, hospitals and research units dedicated to the fight against leukaemia.

Over 1,000 guests, including local and national authorities, VIPs and media representatives, attended a gala dinner signed by celebrity chef Filippo La Mantia and enjoyed a live show with performances from five comic artists from Zelig and singer Edoardo Bennato.

The highlight of the evening was no doubt the dazzling auction in which one lucky bidder walked away with a Sophia Loren dress from the Armani private collection, while others battled it out for maestro Ennio Morricone’s conducting baton, a 200g white truffle from the Piedmont region, an Italian football strip signed by all the national team players, signature bags from Luis Vuitton and Chanel, and a Bulgari ring from the Elisa collection.

Thanks to the support of over 45 companies, firms and associations, a total of 300,000 euros was raised from ticket sales, a lottery and the auction, with all proceeds going to the following organisations:

· AIL, the Italian Association Against Leukaemia-Lymphoma and Myeloma
· AREO, an organisation working on behalf of the Unit Hematology 1 IRCCS San Martino University Hospital of Genoa
· The Operative Unit of Clinical and Experimental Hematology Giannina Gaslini Institute of Genoa
· The Maria Letizia Verga Committee Onlus, an organisation which funds important leukaemia research projects

The event also saw the attendance of various international bodies, including SIOP Europe, the European Association for Paediatric Oncology, and PanCare, a multidisciplinary pan-European network of professionals, survivors and their families aiming to reduce the frequency, severity and impact of treatment side effects for children and adolescents with cancer.
A pioneer of childhood leukaemia treatment, Professor Ching-Hon Pui, M.D., Chair of the Oncology Department of the Fahad Nassar Al-Rashid Chair of Leukemia Research and Co-Director of the Hematological Malignancy Program at St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital in Memphis, also took part in the event. Professor Ching-Hon Pui was named the recipient of the 2011 Henry M. Stratton Medal from the American Society of Hematology (ASH), recognizing the progress he has made in the fight against leukaemia during the past three decades.
