The MTA Long Island Rail Road will provide bus and van service between Great Neck and Port Washington in the early morning hours of Saturday, March 29 as track inspections are made by the Sperry Rail Car between 1:03 a.m. and 5:35 p.m.
The Sperry Rail Car, a bright yellow vehicle fitted with ultrasonic and induction test equipment, is designed to identify internal rail defects not readily visible to the eye.
LIRR track maintenance workers will immediately correct defects, if any should be discovered.
The Sperry Rail Car is used twice a year to inspect 500 miles of LIRR track.
Customers on two eastbound and two westbound trains will be affected and should allow additional travel time to accommodate the inspectionsand service changes.
Eastbound
Customers traveling to Manhasset, Plandome and Port Washington will board a bus or van at Great Neck for transportation to their destination. Passengers should plan for up to 27 minutes additional travel time.
Westbound
Westbound customers who would normally board trains at Port Washington, Plandome and Manhasset between 2:10 a.m. and 4:17 a.m. will insteadboard a bus or van to Great Neck and connect to westbound train service.
Passengers should plan for up to an additional 31 minutes of additional travel time (depending on destination).
