MTA New York City Transit announced the completion of a vital project that now allows customers at the Utica Av A Subway Line IconC Subway Line Icon station to use three new ADA-accessible elevators to reach the platforms from the street level to both northbound and southbound platforms. The elevators will open for service Saturday morning at 10:00 a.m.
This project enables full ADA accessibility at the Utica Avenue A Subway Line IconC Subway Line Icon station on Brooklyn’s Fulton Line. One elevator is located near the intersection of Utica Avenue and Fulton Street connecting the street to the station’s mezzanine. The other two elevators connect the mezzanine with both platforms. Additional project work included the installation of ADA boarding areas with tactile warning strips and signage on the platforms, customer assistance intercoms, and reconfiguring the control area to meet all ADA requirements.
“In the last several years, we have worked hard to make our transit system increasingly accessible to members of our community who have disabilities,” said New York Transit President Carmen Bianco. “These elevators will provide a host of new travel options for customers with limited mobility and will improve customers’ experience.”
The Utica Av A Subway Line IconC Subway Line Icon station’s average weekday ridership for 2013 was 14,700, making it the 13th busiest in Brooklyn. The station, together with the B25 and B46 bus, serves as an important hub for Bedford-Stuyvesant residents.
The $16.95 million project, fully funded by the Federal Transit Administration (FTA), was awarded to Forte Construction Corp. in November 2011.
The completion of this ADA-compliance project brings the number of accessible stations under the Americans with Disabilities Act to 21 in Brooklyn and 82nd overall in the New York City Transit system. Another ADA project has begun at the Ozone Park-Lefferts Blvd station on the A line and is scheduled for completion in 2016.
