loadimage-300x197The Malta Tourism Authority expressed its satisfaction at the results registered by the Gozo tourism sector during the Santa Marija long weekend. The traditional mid-August festivity draws large numbers of Maltese and foreign visitors to Gozo, not only to celebrate the feast of Our Lady held in the capital Victoria, but also to enjoy a relaxing break on the sister island.

Preliminary figures indicate a record number of passengers crossed the channel, amounting to around 9% more than the same weekend last year, with most accommodation providers reporting being fully booked well in advance.

MTA Chief Executive Mr Paul Bugeja commented that “The positive result achieved over Santa Marija is welcome news, particularly considering that it comes in the context of another good summer for the Maltese and Gozitan hospitality industry as a whole. A special note of congratulations is due to Gozo Channel, operators of our inter-island ferry service, who provided an efficient and hassle-free transfer for tens of thousands of passengers. Such an efficient service contributes to continue upgrading the overall quality of our product.”

MTA, together with the Ministry for Tourism, the Ministry for Gozo and the Gozo Tourism Association, continues to promote Gozo’s unique set of characteristics, annual events and special all-year-round appeal.
