Four members of the Seychelles ‘Big 5′ group of musicians (Joseph Sinon, Jean-Marc Volcy, Sandra Esparon, Patrick Victor) are these days finalising plans for their tour of the Indian Ocean Vanilla Islands and of Africa and they were themselves all part of the highly successful ‘Christmas with the Stars’ musical show last Friday night in the grounds of the National Cultural Centre in Victoria.
On Saturday morning they joined colleague musicians and friends of that industry to do their share to ensure that what Seychelles has is maintained for future generations and in so doing help to consolidate their country’s tourism industry. They worked with Flavien Joubert and his Team from the Department of Environment to plant trees at the famous Copolia Nature Trail at Sans Soucis on the main island of Mahe.
The musicians were joined by Alain St.Ange, the Seychelles Minister responsible for Tourism and Culture, Benjamine Rose, the PS for Culture, Jimmy Savy, the CEO of the National Arts Council and Flavien Joubert and Members of his Team from the Department of Environment.
Seychelles had embarked on a campaign to plant 20000 (twenty thousand) young trees and Mr Flavien Joubert, who has been personally driving this campaign took the opportunity of known members of the Music Industry who had gathered at Sans Soucis to welcome everyone to Copolia. “We are happy to announce that we are now nearing the completion of this set target to plant 20000 trees. We thank the “Big 5′ Music Group and their friends for joining in the campaign and for keeping the momentum set by the Department of the Environment” Mr Flavien Joubert said.
Minister Alain St.Ange, the Seychelles Minister responsible for Tourism and Culture was then invited to address all those present. Minister St.Ange emphasised the need for Seychelles to appreciate the environment with which we have been blessed. I salute the efforts of the musicians present to help raise the importance of the environment. “You can make the difference when you join a cause. Last night you and close to a hundred of your colleagues and Choir groups, brought the spirit of Christmas into Victoria as you performed in front of your National Cultural Centre. You were great as you all helped launch the spirit of Christmas in Seychelles. Today you are helping us consolidate our tourism industry because you are not only raising the importance of our environment, but you are taking your place as leaders in the reforestation drive of Seychelles” Minister St.Ange said.
The Minister went on to say that Culture, and in so doing the People of our islands have become the base of our tourism promotional campaign. This has been instigated ever since the President of Seychelles, Mr James Michel launched the Seychelles Brand of Tourism for Seychelles. “We also knew that we have the best for a sun, sea and sand holiday, but we know that today we need to pull in our greatest assets to continue to claim our needed share of the tourism market. Their cannot be anything more important than showcasing our culture and people as our wild card. We all need to embrace this approach and we all need to understand that as this happens the economy of our islands will get stronger” Minister St.Ange said.
Mr Joseph Sinon, the known performer and musician who had instigated this tree planting event for musicians also addressed the gathering at the entrance of the Copolia Nature Trail at Sans Soucis. “I want to thank the Ministry of Tourism and Culture and the National Arts Council for all they are doing for the performing arts, for the musicians. Since the arrival of Minister Alain St.Ange in the Ministry we have seen an explosion of music and it is clear that more is yet to come. We are experiencing a cultural revolution and we can but say thank you to the Government of Seychelles for understanding us” Mr Sinon said.
