N transitions its involvement in Canadian golf

CN and Golf Canada announced today that CN will be modifying its sponsorship position in Canadian golf beyond 2013. As part the transition, CN will step away as title sponsor of the Canadian Women’s Open and Canadian Women’s Tour after the 2013 season.

CN and Golf Canada also announced that CN will continue its title sponsorship of CN Future Links – Canada’s national junior golf program – and expand that program as part of the railway’s transitioned support of Canadian youth and grassroots golf.

“We are very proud of what we have accomplished through our involvement with Golf Canada,” said CN President and CEO Claude Mongeau. “Women’s and youth golf have provided us a strong platform to make a significant impact in the communities in which we operate. We have elevated the status of the Canadian Women’s Open to a world-class event on the LPGA Tour and have played an active role in helping Golf Canada grow junior golf across the country.

“After the tremendous success of the CN Canadian Women’s Open, we are now looking forward to changing our focus to youth golf in Canada. CN will continue to have a major impact across this country by increasing our support into grassroots junior golf programs throughout Canada that are introducing children to a sport they can enjoy for a lifetime. We support Golf Canada’s vision to grow the sport and are thrilled to remain a part of it.”

Current CN Future Links programming includes the ‘Learn to Play’ program as well as mobile clinics, the Junior Skills Challenge, Junior Leagues, Girls Club and the CN Future Links Championships. As part of its investment in Canadian golf, CN remains title sponsor of CN Future Links and also becomes a proud supporter of Golf in Schools. New programming as part of the investment in youth golf will include CN Future Links School Adoption Program and CN Future Links Field Trip Program. For Golf Canada Executive Director and CEO Scott Simmons, the new focus of the association’s partnership with CN will have a significant impact on the growth of Canadian golf in the coming years.

“I can’t say enough what a debt of gratitude golf enthusiasts should be feeling for the support that CN has provided to Canadian golf,” said Simmons. “Since 2006, their support has elevated the status of the Canadian Women’s Open as one of the premiere events on the LPGA Tour while also creating a world-class women’s developmental golf tour here in Canada. The strengthening of CN’s support for junior golf will provide Canada with arguably the world’s best junior golf development program.”

“We believe that Golf Canada’s vision to grow the sport aligns well with our corporate values to impact the health, wellness and safety of children in communities across Canada,” said Mongeau. “Golf and its inherent values are good for our children, and we look forward to elevating the CN Future Links junior program and to investing in Golf in Schools and the development of Canada’s future golfing heroes.”

As part of its continued partnership, CN will assist Golf Canada in the immediate search for a replacement title sponsor for Canada’s National Women’s Open as well as the Canadian Women’s Tour.

“The CN Canadian Women’s Open has provided us a vehicle to raise millions of dollars for pediatric care through CN’s Miracle Match Program,” said Mongeau. “After eight great years, it’s time to pass the torch for another company to align their brand with these tremendous properties and continue the legacy of excellence beyond 2013.”

Golf Canada will also work closely with the LPGA Tour in the search for a replacement title sponsor.

“We are thankful to CN for eight years of supporting the LPGA at the Canadian Women’s Open,” said LPGA Commissioner Michael Whan. “We will work diligently in conjunction with Golf Canada to find the next great partner for this world-class tournament.”

The culmination of the 2013 event will round out eight years of CN’s sponsorship of Canada’s National Women’s Open, through which CN also has raised millions of dollars for children’s hospitals across Canada through the CN Miracle Match Program.

Each year since 2006, CN and Golf Canada have raised funds to support children’s hospitals by matching funds raised through initiatives connected with the CN Canadian Women’s Open. In the past seven years, the CN Miracle Match program has raised more than $8.2 million for children’s hospitals located in the cities that have hosted Canada’s National Women’s Open Championship.

The 2013 CN Canadian Women’s Open will take place August 19-25, 2013 at The Royal Mayfair Golf Club in Edmonton.  CN will soon be announcing the beneficiary of the 2013 CN Miracle Match.
