Transport-Canada-LogoRodney Weston, Member of Parliament for Saint John, on behalf of Denis Lebel, Minister of Infrastructure, Communities and Intergovernmental Affairs and Minister of the Economic Development Agency of Canada for the Regions of Quebec; Claude Williams, New Brunswick Minister of Transportation and Infrastructure; and Mel Norton, Mayor of Saint John, today marked the opening of the Route 1 — One Mile House Interchange.

The $83-million project consisted of design and construction of a new interchange over Route 1 that connects Route 1 with the east side of the Saint John industrial park.

“This project was a priority for our Government, for New Brunswick, and for Saint John residents,” said MP Weston. “This new interchange will significantly improve road safety for area residents and travellers, while reducing congestion. Through this project, and others like it, our Government is creating new jobs and stimulating the local economy.”

“This new infrastructure will provide the trucking industry with more direct access to the city’s industrial park,” said Minister of Transportation and Infrastructure Claude Williams. “It supports economic growth and development in the port city, while also improving safety and traffic flow.”

The Government of Canada contributed $31.7 million through the Canada Strategic Infrastructure Fund and the Province of New Brunswick provided the remaining funding.

This project helped create over 300 jobs and stimulate the local economy. Completion of this project also assists the province in meeting its safety and efficiency objectives for the National Highway System and was identified by the province as part of its long-term transportation strategy.
