download-114New Zealand has been voted the World’s Best Country at the 2014 Daily Telegraph Travel Awards. It’s the third year running that New Zealand has won best-country honours.

According to The Daily Telegraph report, more than 90,000 people voted for their favourite travel companies and destinations in the survey.

The Maldives and South Africa were the runners up in the Best Country category, while Cape Town won Best City.

Telegraph Travel’s head of print, Ben Ross said, “This is a place where British tourists can enjoy the thrill of long-haul travel, coupled with the reassurance of being greeted in our native tongue – albeit spoken with that characteristic twang. It also thrusts dramatic scenery at us, wherever we turn.

“Who could fail to thrill to Milford Sound’s epic vistas, or the volcanoes of Tongariro National Park?”

According to New Zealand’s Prime Minister, John Key, the result is a “great accolade”. The Government had invested an unprecedented $600 million in tourism and tourism promotion since 2008, he said.

Chief Executive of Tourism New Zealand (TNZ), Kevin Bowler says the win is an incredible achievement and supports the positioning of New Zealand as a “must visit” holiday destination.
