Minister for Roads and Ports Duncan Gay today announced the Port of Newcastle continued to set records for its coal exports, reflecting the port’s importance to the state and national economies.
Minister Gay said a record 150.5 million tonnes of coal was exported from Newcastle in 2013, with December being a record month for coal shipments.
“Newcastle shipped almost 17 million tonnes more coal last year than in 2012, when 133.8 million tonnes were exported,” he said.
“The annual growth rate of 12.5% is the fourth consecutive year of above 10% annual growth for coal exports from the port.
“This strong result is an endorsement for the coordinated work of coal producers and service providers to continue to grow exports.”
In addition to the annual record, a new monthly coal export record of 15.1 million tonnes was achieved in December, exceeding the previous record of 14.2 million tonnes set last October.
Minister Gay said in 2013 the port’s coal terminals, operated by Port Waratah Coal Services and the Newcastle Coal Infrastructure Group, both expanded to full capacity, giving the port terminal an annual capacity of 211 million tonnes.
“With the continued development of the Hunter Valley Coal Chain, we will see coal exports from the Port of Newcastle continue to grow.”
