tourism-ireland1-150x150Over 500,000 TV viewers around the Netherlands will be tuning in this week to a programme all about gardens in Northern Ireland.  A crew from a popular gardening show, called Robs Grote Tuinverbouwing (meaning ‘Rob’s Big Garden Design’), spent four days here last June – filming various well-known gardens around Northern Ireland in glorious sunshine.

Invited here by Tourism Ireland, and following an itinerary devised by the Northern Ireland Tourist Board, the crew filmed at Greyabbey House and Gardens on Strangford Lough, the organic Kilcoan Garden at Larne and Ballyrobert Cottage Garden near Ballyclare, the walled garden at Glenarm Castle and Benvarden Garden near Dervock in Co Antrim. The resulting programme airs on Dutch national TV station SBS 6 this week.

Karen van der Horst, Tourism Ireland’s manager in the Netherlands, said: “We were delighted that SBS 6 filmed an episode of this popular TV programme in Northern Ireland – and especially pleased the weather was so kind and showed the gardens and countryside off to perfection. Exposure on TV programmes like this is very important, helping to showcase the superb gardens and tourism offering of Northern Ireland to hundreds of thousands of potential Dutch holidaymakers.

“Tourism Ireland has a busy promotional programme under way in the Netherlands for 2014, to grow visitor numbers from this market. We are highlighting compelling reasons to visit Northern Ireland, with messages of friendliness, the great variety of things to do and see, spectacular scenery, as well as the many events and festivals taking place this year, including the Grande Partenza of the Giro d’Italia event in May.”
