It’s when we proudly don our pink ribbons and pink uniforms and pitch in to raise money for the Breast Cancer Research Foundation.
Ed Bastian in Sky magazine Since 2005, Delta’s employees, customers and their friends and families have raised $11 million for BCRF, including $1.75 million just last year. Those contributions have funded the vital work of 37 different research projects over the years in the pursuit of eradicating breast cancer.
As a global airline, we have a unique opportunity to spread the word about the important work BCRF sponsors that funds promising research to eradicate breast cancer. This year, Delta’s famous “pink plane” kicks off the month with a special flight from New York City to Los Angeles carrying 140 breast cancer survivors and caregivers, many of whom are our own Delta colleagues.
Throughout the month on our flights and at Delta Sky Clubs®, Delta employees wear pink uniforms and sell pink products, including pink lemonade and pink headsets, all to benefit BCRF.
Our longtime support for BCRF is part of Delta’s larger commitment to give back to the communities where we live, work and serve. Earlier this year, we announced that Delta will contribute 1 percent of its net income from the previous year to key charitable organizations. This commitment will be fulfilled through cash contributions and in-kind travel as well as grants from The Delta Air Lines Foundation.
I like to think of it as profit sharing for the community.
In 2016, this commitment is expected to produce $37 million in charitable giving to organizations worldwide, with a focus on supporting education, promoting arts and culture, improving global wellness, advancing global diversity, saluting our armed services members and veterans, and sustaining the environment.
Along with our financial support for nonprofit and community organizations, Delta people are proud to volunteer their time and effort to serve their communities. Their commitments include, among others, building homes with Habitat for Humanity International, constructing playgrounds with KaBOOM!, educating students through Junior Achievement, building bikes for Marine Toys for Tots and donating blood to the American Red Cross.
