tourism-Western-australiaThe 2014 Perth International Arts Festival will open with the Lotterywest Festival Spectacular Veles e Vents, an extraordinary voyage marked by fireworks, music and light.Premier Colin Barnett said the opening performance – supported by the State Government through Lotterywest and Eventscorp – was an Australian exclusive. It will be delivered by one of the world’s biggest outdoor theatre companies, Xarxa Teatre, from Spain.

Veles e Vents, which translates as ‘sails and wind’, symbolises a ship and its relationship with the sea and nature and will feature amazing pyrotechnics and complex moving components.“This will be a really spectacular opening event, staged over three nights, instead of one, to provide more options for audiences to enjoy the performance,” Mr Barnett said.

“The Lotterywest Festival Spectacular Veles e Vents, along with the many other exciting events programmed as part of the 2014 Perth International Arts Festival, will celebrate the State’s important arts and cultural sector.”

Acting Tourism Minister John Day said the performance was expected to attract tens of thousands of people into the city, adding vibrancy and highlighting Perth’s flourishing cultural and arts scene.“The performance is part of a four-year deal to stage high quality and exclusive productions which will help to attract visitors to the festival and the State,” Mr Day said.

“Xarxa Teatre has performed its outdoor spectacles at high profile festivals and events all around the world, and it is a great coup to have them open the 2014 Perth Festival.”
