A Calgary man was killed when the aircraft he was piloting crashed into a home near Lloydminster on Saturday afternoon, police said. The crash happened near Lloydminster, at around 1 p.m. MT in Kitscoty.
Sergeant Jamie Hubbert with the Kitscoty RCMP said that the plane hit the ground about 40 metres from the house before sliding into it. Hubbert also said the pilot was the only person in the plane. The pilot had recently dropped some passengers off at the nearby Lloydminster Municipal Airport. He was dead when rescue crews arrived. One person was home at the time but was not hurt.
It is not yet clear the reason behind the crash, but the Transportation Safety Board is now investigating.
Hubbert said “What we’re waiting on are for investigators from Transport Canada to attend to the scene and conduct their investigation. They’re scheduled to arrive early tomorrow morning from Edmonton and they’ll be reviewing the wreckage and trying to make a determination as to some sort of cause for the accident.”
