Scotland’s national poet will visit Highland Perthshire this weekend to perform a reading at the ‘country’s most remote tearoom’.Rannoch Station Tearoom, which is VisitScotland Taste Our Best accredited, invited Scotland’s Makar, Jackie Kay, to read on the station platform after hearing about her mission to take poetry to unusual locations across the country.
Appointed as Scottish Makar in March this year, Jackie Kay will recite her works, including a new poem written for the visit, on the Rannoch station platform this Sunday with visitors and locals alike set to attend the unique event.
Rannoch Station Tearoom managers, Jenny and Bill Anderson, got in touch with Jackie after hearing a radio interview with the acclaimed writer where she discussed her dream to take poetry to small and unexpected locations during her time as Makar.The tearoom, which sits in the secluded Rannoch Moor, will also be showcased to a national audience with BBC’s The One Show set to follow Jackie’s visit to the West Highland Line station.
Jackie Kay became the third poet to take the post of Scotland’s Makar, or national poet, since it was established in 2004, succeeding Liz Lochhead and Edwin Morgan, Scotland’s first Makar.
Born in Edinburgh, Kay won the Guardian fiction prize in 1998 for her first novel, Trumpet, and was awarded an MBE for services to literature in 2006. Her first collection of poetry, The Adoption Papers, was published in 1991 and was named Scottish First Book of the Year.
