“Power Suite” is Now Open at Silicon Valley’s Airport

Published on : Friday, June 13, 2014

silicon-valley-airportThe “Power Suite” is now open at Mineta San José International Airport (SJC) in Terminal B opposite Gates 17 and 18. The Power Suite (see pictures here) is a new 2,500 square-foot hold room with seating for 150 people. It offers the usual free and wickedly fast Wi-Fi, and comfortable seating and work stations with built-in power outlets so travelers can remain productive prior to boarding their flights.

This extra seating is necessary to accommodate larger, international flights and provide capacity while SJC converts Gates 17 and 18, which currently serve domestic flights only, to serve as international “swing gates.” The modified gates will be able to accommodate a broader range of aircraft including wide-bodies such as the Airbus A330 and Boeing 777. The swing gates will be outfitted with a glass-enclosed corridor (see rendering here) to allow arriving international passengers to proceed directly to SJC’s International Arrivals Building, while maintaining the flexibility to serve domestic flights. These improvements will be completed in fall 2014.

“It’s important that we improve services in our terminals today so we’re prepared for continued passenger growth tomorrow,” said Director of Aviation Kim Becker Aguirre. “We marked 16 consecutive months of passenger traffic growth in April 2014, and our international services to Tokyo/Asia and Mexico have proved popular with Silicon Valley travelers. More international gates give SJC the flexibility to offer more international flights to destinations our travelers are requesting.”

The additional seats in the new Power Suite allow SJC to close Gates 17 and 18 and begin constructing an interior sterile corridor. The structure will separate arriving international passengers from the general traveling public as is the case with the airport’s two existing international gates located at Gates 15 and 16.
