Puducherry conducts 24-day entertainment and shopping expo to draw Tourist

PuducherryFrom May 23 to June 15, the tourism department has organized an entertainment and shopping expo at Uppalam, in order to draw more domestic and overseas tourists to the Union territory of Puducherry. Welfare minister P. Rajavelu said the expo would feature more than 100 stalls.

 

The department will hold cultural programmes on all the 24 days of the event.

The department has planned to hold a series of events immediately after the shopping expo from June till the New Year eve. The events proposed in June and July consist of a food festival, a kite festival, a dance festival, Tour de Pondy (cycleathan) on the lines of Tour de France, a film festival besides a art, design and fashion week and a world astrological conference at Karaikal.
 
The department will organize a national art and craft festival, a painting exhibition, an antique exhibition, a marathon and a sand sculpture fest in August. In September, it will organize a classical music festival, a theatre festival, a magic show, an adventure sports festival, a festival of colours and a world tourism carnival. A crackers festival and a wine festival will be organized in October. In November, the department will organize a shopping festival, treasure hunt, petanque tournament, a world music and band fest and a carnival. In December, the department will organize a beach festival, a masquerade and a street show followed by the New Year celebrations.
 
Last year, in January 17, SpiceJet, launched flight services connecting Puducherry with Bangalore directly and other metro cities – Delhi, Mumbai, Kolkatta and Hyderabad – via Bangalore. Dropped Puducherry from its network in January this year.

 

The government had started talks with SpiceJet to discover the possibilities of resuming flight services. The government requires 240 acres of land to expand the runway of the airport, Rajavelu said.
 
He also said that the Union government had approved tourism-related projects worth Rs 50 crore for Puducherry. The projects include eco-beach development projects at Rs 25 crore, development of heritage clusters at Rs 6 crore, beautification of beach promenade, water treatment plant at Karaikal temple tank at Rs 2.14 crore, beautification of Bharathi Park at Rs 5 crore and phase II of the Mahe River walkway at Rs 6 crore.
