Tourism-Queensland-300x191Travellers around the world have shown their love for a Queensland holiday with Tourism and Events Queensland’s Visit Queensland Facebook page overnight reaching one million fans.

Minister for Tourism and Major Events Jann Stuckey said www.facebook.com/VisitQueensland had confirmed its status as Australia’s most popular state tourism web page and one of the world’s most popular tourism pages.

“This tremendous achievement celebrates Queensland as the ideal Australian holiday destination and recognises our efforts to revive tourism after it stalled under Labor,” Ms Stuckey said.

“On an international level, the Visit Queensland page is highly competitive, trumping international tourism destinations such as California, Switzerland, Singapore, Colorado, Hong Kong and Fiji for number of fans.

“Of the 1 million Visit Queensland Facebook page fans, 34 per cent are from key international visitor markets including the United States, New Zealand, Malaysia, India and the United Kingdom, sharing images, videos and information about Queensland to the world.

“It is a credit to the tireless work that Tourism and Events Queensland (TEQ) has been doing in partnership with the industry and government to grow tourism as one of the four pillars of the economy.

“It was a key election promise and we are delivering on that commitment.” Ms Stuckey said the Visit Queensland Facebook page provided an important platform for industry to connect with future visitors and showcase the diversity of experiences available throughout the state.

“Sharing holiday experiences is second nature to most travellers, and Forbes research found that 50 per cent of Facebook users were inspired to book a holiday to a destination after seeing friends’ holiday pictures there,” she said.

“TEQ is renowned for its cutting-edge digital projects that promote Queensland’s world-class destinations to potential holidaymakers across the globe including a new iPad application, Chinese traveller smartphone applications and a major project to increase Queensland’s presence on YouTube.

“TEQ’s Queensland Explorer Holiday Planner iPad application rated number seven in the free iPad travel section of the iTunes app store following its launch in September this year.”Growing Queensland’s online reputation as Australia’s premier holiday destination is an important part of the Newman Government’s commitment to increase tourist numbers and double annual overnight visitor expenditure from $15 billion to $30 billion by 2020.For details visit www.facebook.com/visitQueensland [ENDS] 26 November 2013Media Contact: Minister Stuckey – Andrew Burke 0439 291 238Tourism and Events Queensland –07 3535 5840
