Surf Life Saving Australia today announced that the 2016 Australian Life Saving Championships (The Aussies), the largest event of its kind, will be held on the Sunshine Coast from Saturday 16 to Sunday 24 April 2016.
The Aussies is Surf Life Saving’s pinnacle event and annual competition, and will take place in 2016 across the Sunshine Coast’s Maroochydore, Alexandra Headland and Mooloolaba beaches.
Surf Life Saving Australia’s President, Graham Ford confirmed that planning for The Aussies 2016 had already commenced and it will be a big event for the movement, following on from The Aussies 2015 and The Coolangatta Gold in 2015 on the Gold Coast.
“The Aussies attracted more than 5,000 competitors at Scarborough Beach in Perth in 2014, and over 6,500 at Kirra Beach on the Gold Coast in 2013, so we are expecting similar numbers for the on the Sunshine Coast in 2016,” Mr Ford said.
“The Aussies has become a major event on the Australian sporting landscape, and consists of a one week festival of Surf Life Saving sporting action. The event in 2015 will for the first time feature a Youth Championships.
“The Aussies is the biggest event of the Surf Life Saving season and a national showcase of the skills needed by our volunteers to ensure they are rescue ready,” he said.
Surf Life Saving Australia will work closely with Sunshine Coast Council and the Queensland Government through Tourism and Events Queensland to deliver the event in the region as part of a growing calendar of sporting, cultural, business and regional events across the state.
Minister for Tourism, Major Events, Small Business and the Commonwealth Games Jann Stuckey said the event would be a real boost for the region’s tourism industry in 2016. “Holding iconic events such as the Aussies on the Sunshine Coast showcases the region and its ability to host major international events with the calendar also including the Noosa International Food and Wine Festival, IRONMAN 70.3 Sunshine Coast, Mooloolaba and Noosa Triathlons,” Ms Stuckey said.
“The Queensland Government’s 20-year plan for Queensland, Destination Success, recognises that events such as this drive repeat visitation and showcase the state’s unique experiences as the industry strive to meet the goal of growing overnight annual visitor expenditure from $15 billion to $30 billion by 2020.”
Sunshine Coast Council, Economic Development – Tourism, Sport and Major Events, Councillor Jason O’Pray said that he looked forward to hosting such a significant and important event for the Surf Life Saving community on the Sunshine Coast.
“Accommodation providers in the area have already started preparing for an influx of visitors during this time, given the size and nature of the event,” he said.
“Surf life Saving is synonymous with the Sunshine Coast lifestyle – we are a perfect location to host the Aussies – and we are keen and ready to welcome competitors, their supporters, friends and family with open arms to our special part of the world.”
