A bridge in the centre of Kendal which has been refurbished and repainted by Network Rail has reopened a week early.
The Longpool railway bridge, which is around 170 years old, was repainted over recent weeks and also had steel repairs carried out and pigeon-proofing measures put in place.
The £400,000 investment will extend the life of the bridge and reduce the need for future maintenance, meaning less disruption for the town and local people.
Ian Joslin, Network Rail’s area director, said: “This work has restored an historic structure which is one of the gateways to Kendal. We worked closely with the local authority to minimise disruption to motorists as much as possible and, through careful planning and safe and efficient working, we have been able to fully reopen the bridge a week early. I’d like to thank local people and businesses for their patience while this essential work was carried out.”
Rail services between Oxenholme and Windermere were not affected during the project.
