The results of the 2014 Air Transport News Awards were announced

turkish-airlines (1)The 2014 Air Transport News Awards Ceremony took place in Ciragan Palace in Istanbul, the city were east meets west on March 9th.

 

And “Leader of The Year” award was presented to Turkish Airlines’ CEO, Temel Kotil Ph.D. by Managing Director of Air Transport News, Dr. Kostas Iatrou.

Dr. Temel Kotil, CEO of Turkish Airlines accepting the award of the Leader of the Year said: “On behalf of Turkish Airlines, I am honoured to receive such a significant award, “Leader of the Year” from a distinguished online information source for the aviation industry; Air Transport News.

 

We are still proud of being awarded “Airline of the Year” in 2013, and this “Leader of the Year” award is the manifestation of the continued success of Turkish Airlines.

 

I assume that such an award is the fruit of our love and care for our business and passengers, this award records that Turkish Airlines is again the world’s rising star in the aviation.

 

We highly appreciate our award, as it will boost our ambition for our hard work on being always the best on our Business.”

 

Dr. Kostas Iatrou, Managing Director of Air Transport News stated that: “Air Transport News honours for the third consecutive year the leader companies in the major categories of the air transport industry elected based on a democratic procedure. I want to congratulate all the winners for their achievement.”

 

The CEO of Turkish Airlines, Ph.D. Temel Kotil was born in 1959. Dr. Kotil graduated from Aeronautical Engineering Department at Istanbul Technical University (ITU) in 1983.

 

He received his Ph.D. degree from the University of Michigan, Ann Arbor, in 1991. After founding and managing the Aviation and Advanced Composite Laboratories of ITU, he also served as Chair and Associate Dean of Faculty of Aeronautics and Astronautics Engineering.

 

He served as the Head of Research Planning and Coordination Department in Metropolitan Municipality of Istanbul.

Going to US for a second time in 2001, he served as guest professor in the University of Illinois, followed by a position of Research Engineer in Advanced Innovative Technologies Inc, in Troy, New York, between 2002 and 2003.

 

Mr. Kotil, married with 4 children, has authored many articles and publications in the aeronautical science journals, and papers in seminars and conferences.

Dr. Kotil started his career with Turkish Airlines in 2003, as the Chief Technical Officer in Turkish Technic, Inc. He became the CEO of Turkish Airlines in 2005. Dr. Kotil has served on the Board of Governors of IATA since 2006 and on the Presidents’ Committee of AEA (Association of European Airlines) since 2010. Dr Kotil, the Vice-Chairman of AEA from 2012 until 2013, has become the President of AEA in 2014.

The carrier of Dr. Kotil in Turkish Airlines is closely related with the historical development of the company in the last 11 year.

 

In 2003, Turkish Airlines was a modest regional airline with a fleet of 65 aircraft, flying to 104 destinations including 76 international and 28 domestic and carrying approximately 10 million passengers.

 

Today Turkish Airlines is a Star Alliance member, 4-star airline with a fleet of 240) aircraft (passenger and cargo) flying to 244 destinations worldwide with 202 international and 42 domestic.

 

Turkish Airlines is the world’s 1st largest carrier by number of destinations and with an average fleet age of just over 6 years, well below all its main European peers, in passenger numbers the carrier achieved a 23.6% huge growth in 2013 in comparison with the previous year by carrying approximately 50 million passengers.

 

In 2013, Turkish Airlines’ annual return reached a total of 14 billion dollars while it was totally 1,2 billion dollars in 2003.

 

In parallel with the commencement of the carrier of Dr. Kotil in the company, Turkish Airlines has greatly expanded its place in the global aviation community by a series of large-scale aircraft orders, continual network expansion and the implementation of other significant investments designed to make Turkish Airlines a truly global brand.

 

Today, Turkish Airlines offers the world’s most comprehensive network and aims to bring the passenger experience to a new level with its expanded fleet, the location of its Istanbul hub that allows for one stop connections between virtually any two cities on earth and the rich cultural heritage which has helped to form the basis of its award-winning service.
