gangaWith the new government coming into power in India, new tourism plans are coming up.

Ganges, one of the major rivers of India may very soon be opened for cruise line. The plan is to develop Ganga as a major waterway for transport and tourism.

The approximate cost of the new plan is around Rs 6,000 crore which will pass through the historic towns of Bihar such as Bhagalpur, Munger, Patna and Buxar.

After starting from Varanasi, it will halt at Sarnath and then at Patna, from where it will sail through Munger, Farakka, Kushbagh, Plassey, Kalna, Chandernagore, and finally stop in Kolkata.

The waterway plan will eventually be extended till Allahabad, covering a 1,600km stretch of the river.

The major banks of Ganga will be beautified and 11 multi-purpose terminals will be constructed.

The riverfronts will have a concrete pathway on both sides of the river which might eventually attract tourists as a picnic spot.

There will also be arrangements for light and sound displays adding to the beauty of the place and also giving a cultural insight to the tourists.

The river Ghats will be given a major revamp focusing on its cleanliness and easier accessibility.

With a mini cabinet consisting of five ministries (Ganga Rejuvenation, Environment, Tourism, Power, and Shipping) are responsible to put into action the colossal task of cleaning of the longest river of India.

The cabinet may even look at taking the help of Israel for the cleaning of the river. The government is even looking at construction of a dozen barrages on the river and development of hydropower projects.

While Uma Bharti will take care of the cleaning of the river, Environment Ministry will gauge the effect of the various river projects on environment; Tourism ministry will develop the river from Haridwar to Kolkata; Power Ministry will look into developing hydropower projects; and Shipping Ministry will take care of the commercial transport on the river.

For the execution of the project, both the ministry of tourism as well as the human resource development ministry has to work hand in hand.

One will promote the heritage site while the other will work towards setting up a research institute on the subject.

Prime Minsiter Narendra Modi’s ‘Ganga Plan’ includes the herculean task of cleansing the river and reviving it to turn it into a major tourist attraction.

So get ready for planning a cruise holiday from Varanasi to Kolkata.
