Sal Salis scoops ‘The Eco Award’ at Smith Hotel Awards 2014

Smith-HotelSal Salis Ningaloo Reef, Wild Bush Luxury’s exclusive safari camp located in Western Australia’s Cape Range National Park, was announced the winner of ‘The Eco Award’ at boutique hotel specialist Mr & Mrs Smith’s second annual Smith Hotel Awards event in London on 7 November, 2014.

To win the award, Sal Salis beat off strong contenders from hundreds of Smith hotels, including runners-up Sextantio Albergo Diffuso, Italy and Cuixmala, Mexico.

Wild Bush Luxury CEO, Charles Carlow, is delighted to receive this news and hopes the award will encourage others to combine luxury with sustainable practices.

“We are extremely proud to have taken home the ‘Eco Award’ at the Smith Hotel Award Event last week.

This is an incredible achievement for Wild Bush Luxury and for Sal Salis, and is testament to the focus and importance we put on operating our luxurious wilderness camps in an environmental and sustainable way,” said Mr Carlow.

He continued, “At Wild Bush Luxury, we set out to create inspiring experiences that immerse our guests in Australia’s wilderness and whilst hosting guests in these ecologically unique and sensitive environments, we also make a firm commitment to sustainability and conservation.

Our intention is not only to offer quintessential and exclusive Australian experiences, but to create memorable moments that have positive impacts on the environment as well as on our guests.”

Sal Salis, a remote, beachside safari camp nestled in the dunes of Western Australia’s Cape Range National Park, prides itself on being a model ecotourism development camp operated under The Department of Parks and Wildlife.

In keeping with Wild Bush Luxury’s overarching, sustainable tourism ethos, the camp’s nine spacious, free standing, raised safari tents have been constructed to protect flora and fauna and to blend in seamlessly with their surrounding environment, while the boardwalks also prevent unnecessary soil erosion.

The camp’s small size ensures its impact on the environment is minimal and through the property’s thoughtful design, guests are naturally exposed to the striking sights and sounds of the wilderness that surrounds them.

More than 20,000 members of the hotel-loving public voted for their favourite stays throughout September, after which shortlists were put to a panel of three specialist judges in each category.

For The Eco Award the judges included Holly Tuppen, editor of Green Hotelier, Livia Firth, founder of Eco Age and Chris Gorell Barnes, co-founder of the Blue Marine Foundation.

Co-founder of Mr & Mrs Smith, James Lohan, said when they started Smith in 2003 it was to find the very best boutique hotels in the UK, a mission that has now taken them around the globe.

“Over the last 11 years, we’ve taken that mission all over the world, so the list of 2014 award-winners really does represent the best of the best on the global hotel scene,” he said.

“Choosing from such incredible hotels is a tough job, of course, which is why we asked the public to help, and thanks to them and our panel of specialist judges, we think we’ve arrived at the ultimate hot list.”
