ScotrailScotRail It also won the second biggest prize, Train Operator of the Year, as well as the Sustainability Excellence category in what was a highly successful awards night in London for the Glasgow-based company.

Judges were impressed by ScotRail’s improvements in a wide range of areas – including performance and punctuality, smart ticketing, integrated travel, safety, and limiting the impact of disruption upon its customers.

They also praised the company’s ongoing success in:

• Delivering the largest ever roll-out of free wifi on UK railways

• Using innovative schemes, such as wind turbines, solar panels and eco-friendly trains, to reduce their carbon footprint.

Steve Montgomery, managing director of ScotRail, said: “These national awards are testament to everyone who has helped us to expand services, lower carbon emissions, and – most importantly – improve customers’ experience of Scotland’s railways during the last year.

“While this is a great moment for our company, we remain focused on continuing to build on this success, in particular as we prepare to welcome thousands of visitors to Scotland for the Commonwealth Games and Ryder Cup this summer.”

Vernon Barker, UK Rail Managing Director from Aberdeen-based FirstGroup, the operator of ScotRail, said: ‘I’d like to congratulate Steve Montgomery and his team on their success at the Rail Business Awards.

“We are proud to operate Scotland’s railway and the important role we play connecting people and communities, and look forward to developing further our customer service offering for the people of Scotland.”

The 16th annual Rail Business Awards were held at the Hilton Park Lane Hotel.
