10 per cent of the flights with 20 biggest carriers would be cancelled into and out of London airport as the Hurricane Gonzalo has arrived in the UK.

Winds at the speed of 75mph in coastal areas and 65mph inland will tear across much of the country, bringing disruption to many areas.

Scotland was hit by winds and rain as the gusts reached Britain’s north western parts from Ireland.

The rain and wind will move eastwards, varying in intensity across the UK, with the strongest gusts on the coasts. It is expected that gusts will be up to 65mph in the North West in the morning and up to 50mph in central and eastern parts of England in the afternoon.

A yellow weather warning has been issued by the Met department. Strong winds will follow today as low pressure clears eastwards. Strongest winds will coincide with the rush hour in places causing localised disruption.

Fallen leaves will increase chances of blocked drains with risk of surface water affecting roads.
