A part of a Wall of History honoring Seychellois people of Indian Origins was unveiled as part of the Seychelles-India Day Celebrations 2015.
This Wall of History is set to also progressively honor Seychellois of French, African, English and Chinese Origins. The Wall of History will be at the house of Culture at the National Cultural Centre and help bring to life more and more people who have helped make Seychelles the melting pot of cultures it is today.
Indian families who settled in Seychelles in the 1870’s have this week been honoured in the Wall of History located at the House of Culture in Victoria.
Their names were revealed on Friday at the official opening ceremony held at the House of Culture, an event held as part of the third edition of the Seychelles-India Day celebrations.
The inauguration of the Wall of History is a historical event as it recognises the dedication and efforts of the first Indians who came to Seychelles and have contributed greatly towards its development.
Speaking at the event, the chairperson of the Seychelles-India Day celebrations committee Ramu Pillay said recognising these families is a remarkable initiative.
He expressed his heartfelt gratitude towards the President of the Republic James Michel and the Minister of Tourism and Culture Alain St.Ange and his team for supporting the Seychelles-India Day celebrations event each year.
The Indian high commissioner Sanjay Panda said the opening of this Wall of History is a historical occasion.
The Indian High Commissioner thanked Minister St.Ange for such an initiative and for recognising the importance of honouring people who have played vital roles in the development of Seychelles.
He added that the Indian community has contributed greatly towards the social and economic development of Seychelles.
Minister St.Ange said the House of Culture helps to remind us where we come from and where we are going, adding that the Wall of History is in a fitting place.
“It is vital to recognise these men and women who have worked hard to make Seychelles what it is today,” Minister St.Ange said.
He thanked the Indian community for its devotion and support , and for helping to make Seychelles the country which continues to grow on the right path.
Among those present at the event were the Designated Minister Vincent Meriton, who also thanked the Indian community for their contribution towards the development of our society in all aspects.
“Let us keep working together and let us move forward in unity so that we can keep succeeding,” Minister Meriton added.
