Broadway is a quintessential English village with a history stretching back to Roman times that has been called the “Jewel of the Cotswolds”. Sitting in the heart of the village, The Lygon Arms has been at the centre of everything that’s been going on there since the first recorded mention of it in 1532, when it was known as the White Hart Inn.

The current name of the hotel is connected to General William Lygon, who served under the Duke of Wellington, and was victorious in the Battle of Waterloo. He bought the inn c.1820 and when he died he left it to his butler, who renamed it from The Lygon to The Lygon Arms in honour of his master.
THE ASSEMBLY ROOM
When hunting as a sport rose in popularity throughout the 19th Century, an Assembly Room for the hunt gatherings and balls was added to the hotel and it served this purpose for almost 100 years. At the turn of the 20th Century the hotel was bought by Sydney Bolton Russell who commissioned the renowned architect Sir Aston Webb to update the Assembly Room so that it could be used for dining in summer and as a ballroom in winter. He moved the room to make more space and room for a garden behind. At this time the Assembly Room became the Great Hall, which is now The Lygon Arms’ famous dining room.
The Lygon Arms is famously associated with the Civil War – Oliver Cromwell stayed before the Battle of Worcester in 1651 and Charles I used the inn to meet and rally his royalist supporters – the room he used is now the Charles I Sitting Room. In modern times, star-crossed lovers and serial marriers, Richard Burton and Elizabeth Taylor stayed in September 1963, shortly after they had first met and controversially fallen in love on the set of Cleopatra.

The Great Hall Restaurant
The Lygon Arms has always had a focus on food throughout the years and now has a multi-award-winning restaurant. The Great Hall has 2 AA Rosettes and in June 2013 Luke’s Broadway opened. This 35 seat bistro-style restaurant has 19 year old star Luke Thomas offering a modern take on classical British food.
Alongside the great food on offer the hotel’s bar is where you can indulge in a full range of champagnes, Cognacs, Armagnacs and premium beers, while you can relax in the Lounge for afternoon tea.
The aim at The Lygon Arms has always been to preserve traditional Lygon traditions of great food and great service in modern, comfortable surrounds. This commitment has been recognised by it being the first country house hotel to get the Queen’s Award for successful appeal to overseas visitors, and also being nominated as the very first Egon Ronay Hotel of the Year.
