Southern Railway – Don’t sit on the bench – bid on it!

Published on : Monday, December 9, 2013

Southern-Rail-300x136A once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to buy a piece of Brighton railway station history will very soon be made available to railwayana collectors.

One of Brighton station’s unusual circular benches which Southern has donated to Martlets Hospice to help raise funds for the charity, will go live on e-bay on Thursday 5th December with the hope that railway enthusiasts and those with large gardens will bid for the iconic concourse furniture.

The bench is one of a number replaced when Southern completed the £5m refurbishment of Brighton station concourse and is made up of individual seats which when put together form a circle. This configuration is ideal for ringing a large tree in the garden, but the seating can also be used individually anywhere.

Andy Harrowell, Southern’s CSR and Partnerships Managers said: “When we replaced the benches, we thought it would be a good idea to donate them to our corporate charities, the Martlets Hospice and the Royal Marsden cancer charity for them to either use, or to sell on to raise much needed funds.

“This bench has been an integral part of Brighton station for many years and so we’re hoping that bidding on this rare piece of railwayana will be fast and furious, and will raise a good amount of cash for the Martlets.”

Those wishing to place a bid can visit e-bay.co.uk after 6pm on Thursday 5th December and enter the Martlets seller ID (Martletshospice), find the bench and bid on it. They will have until 6pm on Sunday 15th when the auction closes.
