2263-209x300Southern has published its 2013 Sustainability Report, focusing on its positive contributions made to safety, the environment, its passengers, employees and communities.

Southern’s Managing Director, Chris Burchell said: “Our approach to sustainability is important to our passengers, staff and stakeholders and is therefore important to us. As such, it is key to our business development and we continue to work hard to create a sustainable rail network with our passengers’ needs at the centre of our business. We are committed to becoming further integrated with the communities we serve and being more environmentally efficient.”

In the report, Southern explains its aim to make a positive difference in the way it works and the services it offers. Southern is working hard to reduce the effect it has on the environment, to become more integrated with its communities and to make Southern the natural choice of employer for existing staff and new recruits. Some highlights in the report include:

More than 70% of all waste recycled
Investors in People Silver accreditation achieved
5,857 cycle parking spaces available at stations
100% of Southern units have CCTV coverage
62% employee engagement
Over 130 staff trained in recognising potential suicide risks
£62,519 invested in charities and community sponsorships
265 Stakeholder meetings held

Mr Burchell added: “We’ve faced a challenging 12 month period and this report highlights our efforts to improve the customer experience for all across our network. Across our business we have undertaken an excellent range of activities to support local communities and have much more planned for 2014.”
