Sri Lanka celebrated its 67th Independence Day with great zeal and fervour

sri-lankaThe Democratic Socialist Republic of Sri Lanka or popularly known as Sri Lanka was known as Ceylon prior to the year 1972.

 

February 4 is the official celebration day of Sri Lanka’s Independence Day from the United Kingdom in 1948. The day is celebrated as a public holiday in the nation and is observed and regarded as a very special national event.

The independence day of Sri Lanka is a great national occasion celebrated with parades and pageants combined with the spirit of patriotism and national pride.

 

The celebrations begin with the hoisting of the national flag and singing the national anthem, followed by the traditional lighting of the lamp ceremony.

 

Subsequently there are various cultural programs as well as serving of refreshments.

This year, marking the 67th Independence Day, Sri Lankan High Commissioner retired Air Chief Marshal Jayatath Weerakkody and his wife hosted a large reception.

 

President Maithripala Sirisena called for a process of national reconciliation between the Sinhalese in the south and the Tamils in the north and east of the country.

In Muscat, hundreds of Sri Lankan expatriates gathered at the Sri Lankan Embassy to mark the 67th Independence Day.

 

Eminent Buddhist monk from Sri Lanka, Maduluwawe Sobitha Thero, was present in the embassy during the celebrations.

 

In 2014, the two countries signed a MoU in the field of manpower which enhanced benefits and employment opportunities for Sri Lankans in the government and private sectors.

Military parade and procession in Colombo (Kotte), close to the Parliament is a must watch event if you are in Sri Lanka on the Independence Day.
