Star Cruises, the leading cruise line in Asia-Pacific, has commissioned shipbuilder Meyer Werft in Germany to build another new mega cruise ship, the second order in four months. This 150,000-tonne vessel will bring Star Cruises’ Asian fleet to nine ships upon its delivery in fall 2017.
The Euro 697.2 million (HKD 7.359 billion) new build will be a sister ship to the last ship Star Cruises ordered in October 2013. It will be approximately 330 metres in length and accommodate 3305 passengers in lower berths in 1,682 cabins with a maximum capacity of over 4,500.
This second new build will further consolidate Star Cruises’ leading position in Asia and strengthen its market penetration in the region. The construction of these two ships is in line with Star Cruises’ long-term strategy in modernizing and expanding its fleet. With a speed of up to 24 knots, the ship can exercise great flexibility in serving a large number of exciting itineraries. Like the sister ship to be delivered in fall 2016, the new ship will be designed to cater to the unique preferences of Asian cruisers and enable Star Cruises to take advantage of the growing demand for cruise travel in Asia-Pacific. It will be a mega cruise ship that Asia truly deserves.
Meyer Werft, which will build both new ships, constructed Star Cruises’ first new build, SuperStar Leo, in 1998, and its sister ship SuperStar Virgo, which will be on a seasonal homeport deployment in Hong Kong from April to October 2014.
