Strict measures to preserve Koh Tachai marine park Thailand

Koh Tachai2The Thai Natural Resources and Environment Ministry have taken some serious measures to prevent further damage to the Koh Tachai marine park. The park is at risk of environmental degradation from spoiled coral and rubbish accumulated in the water as a result of the number of tourists visiting the park.

The Ministry has ordered that there will be no bars in Koh Tachai, also tourists numbers will be limited to preserve the Similan Marine National Park in Phangnga province.

Koh Tachai will have daily tourist visitation limited to 200 people and 250 people will be allowed in Koh Similan said Park chief Nat Kongkesorn.

All structures built within the park will have to be demolished. The tourists will have to be spread around the island to avoid concentration in one particular area. These instructions have been given to every travel agent operating in the area.

Tourism firms will have a quota which can be availed by travellers making online booking for the national park shelters. Swimmers and divers will be confined to a restricted area to preserve sensitive marine and costal resources.

Visitors will not be allowed to feed marine animals. They will be prohibited from urinating and defacing the sea.

Boat drivers too will not be allowed to run the engines of their boats at high revolutions as spinning propellers may disturb marine life and aquatic animals.

No waste disposal will be allowed in the water and boatmen will be strictly instructed to bring back waste to the mainland so that they can dispose of the waste in the Thai Muang district.

All the 16 boat operating firms were called to discuss and devise short and long term policies to limit the damage in the area. The members agreed that the number of tourists need to be controlled.

This will definitely affect many operators as each firm received more than 150 booking per day and about 1000 visitors came to Koh Tachai daily. Tour operators said that it will be hard to comply with the numbers but Nat Kongkesorn said that companies need to individually distribute tickets to each customer to prevent corruption and bribery.

The coral reefs in the shallow water were damaged due to bleaching many years ago but that was not caused by waste release in water. Neither is the water treatment plant affecting the ecosystem and marine life in the island which is about a kilometer from the coastline he added.
