Sunrise Airways is poised to expand its Western Caribbean route network this summer with the launch of new, regularly scheduled service from its hub in Port-au-Prince, Haiti to four cities in Cuba – Havana, Camaguey, Holguín and Santiago de Cuba. The carrier, which has operated regular charter service to Holguín since November 2013, was recently granted a formal designation by the Haitian Ministry of Foreign Affairs to operate the new routes.
Philippe Bayard, President of Sunrise Airways, commented on the Cuba expansion, saying: “The feedback from customers who have flown on our Holguín charters and the on-going requests we’ve received for added flight service indicates the viability of the Cuba-Haiti market and our ability to serve it. We look forward to meeting all remaining regulatory requirements in short order and beginning service in the next three months.”
News of Sunrise’s planned expansion to Cuba follows closely on the heels of the carrier’s June 2014 announcement of its first-ever scheduled passenger service between Port-au-Prince and Kingston, Jamaica, also slated for launch during the summer 2014 period.
“These are exciting times for all of us at Sunrise Airways as we seek to realize our goal to better unite the Western Caribbean with safe, reliable, and customer-focused air service of which we can all be proud,” said Bayard.
Sunrise Airways is evaluating options to augment its fleet with new aircraft to operate on its new Cuba routes.
“We’re currently considering a number of larger aircraft types in order to provide passengers with both comfort and ample storage for the large amounts of excess baggage often carried by passengers on these routes,” said Bayard.
An official launch date, as well as schedule and pricing information for the new Sunrise Airways flights will be announced in the coming weeks.
