SWISS is the official airline and supplier to the European Athletics Championships Zürich 2014, which will be held in the city from 12 to 17 August. Throughout the event, The Airline of Switzerland will also be maintaining its own SWISS Pavilion on Zurich’s popular Sechseläuten-Platz. The Pavilion will be the scene of various entertaining attractions and an exciting competition. And on the “marathon weekend” the SWISS Band and the SWISS Pilot Combo will be playing at nearby Bürkliplatz for athletes and spectators alike.
The special SWISS Pavilion on Zurich’s Sechseläuten-Platz will be home to a number of attractions during the coming European Athletics Championships, which will be held in the city from 12 to 17 August. To begin with, the Pavilion’s terrace will boast a wonderful view of the surrounding square, which recently underwent an extensive refurbishment and redesign. And inside, the “Photo Booth” will offer visitors the chance to have their picture taken against any of various backgrounds and have the image printed out in postcard form. They can even send or post their picture there and then, too, using a QR code.
Elsewhere in the Pavilion, an interactive flight simulator will allow visitors to try their hand at landing at Zurich Airport in various degrees of difficulty. The simulator is controlled by body movements alone. And it even orients itself to the SWISS timetable: whichever type of SWISS aircraft is currently on approach to Zurich is the one the visitor is offered to demonstrate their flying skills.
SWISS will also be running an exciting competition during the Championships week, in association with local radio station Radio 24. Each day from Monday to Friday a special “SWISS bus” will stop in the early evening at a particular Zurich location. The participants will then have to race their way – on foot, by bike, by car or by public transport – back to the Radio 24 mobile studio on Sechseläuten-Platz, where, if they can answer a particular quiz question, they can win a number of attractive prizes.
The spectators (and the participants!) for the Championships’ two marathon races will also be treated to SWISS musical entertainment at the city’s Bürkliplatz on “marathon weekend”. The 50-member SWISS Band will play during the women’s event on Saturday 16 August, while the 15-strong SWISS Pilot Combo (who are all members of the SWISS cockpit crew corps) will perform the next day, both during the men’s marathon race and afterwards at the “City Festival” on Sechseläuten-Platz.
Cooly, the official mascot of the European Athletics Championships Zürich 2014, flew SWISS to Paris on 5 June to look in on Swiss athlete Ellen Sprunger and her training preparations. Cooly took a camera crew along, too, and Swiss TV showed the visit as part of its daily “Abendsession-Live” programme on SRF 2.
