More than 200 emergency service and Sydney Airport personnel will take part in a training exercise tonight to test the airport’s emergency response plan.
Exercise Nightbird will commence at 7pm and is expected to finish at midnight.
The exercise will test aspects of the airport’s emergency plan, including activation of the various facilities and resources available to support agencies that would be involved in managing an emergency at Sydney Airport.
The exercise will involve the NSW Police Force, Fire and Rescue NSW, Aviation Rescue and Fire Fighting and Virgin Australia.
“Sydney Airport is committed to the highest levels of safety and emergency planning and this exercise will see us partnering with the NSW Police and other emergency services on what is an important part of our emergency response plan,” Sydney Airport Chief Executive Officer Kerrie Mather said.
The exercise scenario will involve the crash landing of a domestic 737 service at the perimeter fence following a mechanical issue on board.
Botany Bay Local Area Commander, Superintendent Karen McCarthy, said the exercise is a valuable opportunity to test the response of a range of agencies to an emergency we all hope will never happen.
“The public must have confidence in our ability not just to be able to plan for an incident such as this, but more importantly, that we are prepared and test our capabilities regularly,” Supt McCarthy said.
Civil Aviation Safety Regulations require airport operators to conduct full emergency exercises at least every two years.
Members of the public may see emergency vehicles in the vicinity of the airport and are advised that this is an exercise only and there is no need for concern.
