CEO Kerrie Mather said, “Sydney Airport delivered solid growth in the first half of 2014 with international passengers up 4.7% and total passengers up 2.3%.
The strong international result for the half was underpinned by robust Chinese New Year and Easter periods, in addition to a number of successful business, sporting and cultural events hosted by Sydney, for example the Ashes, Vivid and Rotary.
International seat growth for the half was 2.9% versus the strong 4.7% passenger growth, demonstrating travel demand significantly outperforming market capacity growth. During 2014 we’ve served a record 18.6 million passengers.
“Malaysia (+22.5%), Hong Kong (+17.0%), China (+15.8%), India (+15.4%) and Singapore
(+9.3%) were our strongest performing nationalities over the half, showing the continued benefit of strong demand from our Asian neighbours.
We also achieved consistent growth from a variety of other nationalities including Australian outbound, UK, USA and French.
“International traffic during June was again driven by strong Chinese passenger growth (+13.1%).
The Chinese nationality market also contributed the largest number of incremental passengers this month, followed by both the Malaysian and Indian markets.
Load factors amongst Asian carriers this month improved, with notable increases from Cathay Pacific and Sichuan Airlines.
