sydney-airport-logo1Sydney Airport, in partnership with Variety – the Children’s Charity, today launched its Christmas Giving Appeal to raise funds for children in need over the Christmas period.

The Christmas Giving Appeal launch event marked the official unveiling of the airport’s 10-metre Christmas Giving Tree in the forecourt of the airport’s T1 International terminal, displaying ‘Variety Hearts’ representing donations, plus Aussie singing stars John Paul Young and Shannon Noll providing entertainment.

The event also featured the launch of the Variety Santa Fun Run with a mass of Santas making a collective dash across the tarmac at Sydney Airport. This year’s Variety Santa Fun Run on 1 December will mark the first time Santas in every capital city in Australia will run, walk, skip and dance through their respective routes on the same date.

To be part of this special Christmas event and become a ‘Claus for a cause’, you can register at http://www.varietysantafunrun.com.au for $40 for adults or $25 for children (including Santa suit), while little elves aged two years and under can join the fun for free.

“We’re delighted to work with Variety over the Christmas season to raise vital funds for children in our community,” Sydney Airport Chief Executive Officer, Kerrie Mather, said.

“Sydney Airport welcomes 37 million passengers a year and we encourage people travelling through the airport over the Christmas period to get involved and support this worthy cause by giving generously and participating in the range of activities on offer at the airport.

“We’re pleased that the airport community – including the 28,000 people who work across 800 businesses – has embraced this initiative, supporting activities and donation collection points across our T1 International and T2 Domestic terminals.

“All funds raised will go directly towards helping Aussie kids and their families living with sickness, disadvantage or special needs.”

Chairman of Variety – the Children’s Charity NSW, Peter Hebbes AM, welcomed the charity’s partnership with Sydney Airport and the difference it will make to the lives of Aussie kids.

“Variety faces a huge challenge this Christmas to meet the demand for specialised pieces of equipment to help children in need gain mobility, self-esteem and independence. The fantastic support of Sydney Airport and its partners will make a significant difference to many children and their families, helping Aussie kids be kids this Christmas and beyond,” Mr Hebbes said.

“We are urging local businesses to get involved in purchasing a Variety Heart from our wish list of equipment currently needed. This large heart will be displayed on Sydney Airport’s 10-metre high tree in acknowledgement of their support.

“We hope to raise $250,000 from the campaign which will be used to provide disadvantaged kids across NSW and the ACT with specialised equipment tailored to their needs, which could include wheelchairs, modified trikes and walkers, or even specialised technology to aid communication. The funds could also enable many more special needs children to attend the Variety Kids Christmas Party – an opportunity for them to enjoy the spirit of the festive season.”

As part of the Sydney Airport and Variety six-week Christmas campaign, travellers can get their Christmas presents wrapped for a gold coin donation at the handy gift wrapping bars across T1 and T2, pose for a photo with a Variety Bash car, leave their mark on Sydney by purchasing a gift tag for the Variety tree or win a prize by donating to Variety’s spinning wheel.

The airport will also host Christmas entertainment and donation collection areas throughout the campaign, which runs from today until Christmas Day.
