Tasmania Welcomes New Tourism Ventures

Published on : Monday, June 23, 2014

ttfSensitive investment in Tasmania’s natural estate will boost the state’s tourism offering, attract increased visitation and aid conservation efforts, according to peak national industry body Tourism & Transport Forum (TTF).

Expressions of Interest are now open for appropriate new tourism experiences in the Tasmanian Wilderness World Heritage Area and all of the state’s national parks and reserves.

TTF Chief Executive Ken Morrison said this is great news for conservation and tourism in Tasmania.

“Supporting sensible and appropriate tourism ventures in these wilderness areas will create new reasons to visit and new revenue for conservation while dispersing the benefits of tourism to regional areas,” said Mr Morrison.

“The state already has a number of outstanding examples where natural beauty and heritage are complemented and made accessible by high-quality tourism offerings including multi-day walking trails, island cruises, historic site tours and iconic eco-lodges.

“Through the EOI process, even more of these opportunities can be realised, drawing on the expertise of private industry to boost the benefits of nature-based tourism for Tasmania’s world-class environmental heritage and its 40,000 tourism-related jobs.

“Tourism and conservation are not mutually exclusive and can co-exist to meet visitor expectations through improving access and the visitor experience, while helping to achieve important conservation outcomes.

“If the natural amenity is compromised, that reduces the areas’ attractiveness as a destination and tourism operators know that inappropriate proposals will not be considered.

“Appropriate amenities that facilitate and enrich the visitor experience will allow more people to visit, encourage visitors to stay longer and explore further, and enhance the overall brand of Tasmania.

“This EOI process sees the government delivering on its election commitment to establish an EOI process to encourage private investment in national parks.

“This is another vote of confidence in Tasmania’s tourism industry, which is aiming to attract 1.5 million visitors per year by 2020 while also providing additional employment opportunities.”
