Territory Day to be celebrated with festivity

Published on : Monday, June 30, 2014

Northern-Territory-300x86 (1)The Giles Government wants Territorians to use this Territory Day to celebrate everything that’s great about living here and consider the possibility of a future public holiday.

“I want all Territorians to join in the celebrations for Territory Day this year from Darwin to Alice Springs and Kalkaringi to Borroloola,” Chief Minister Adam Giles said.
“It’s our day and I want Territorians to think about what it really means to them. The occasion is an opportunity to reflect on our history, think about how far we’ve come and where we are going.

“The Government strongly believes that in future there should be a public holiday to mark this special occasion and I’d like everyone to think about this question as they celebrate tomorrow.

“It’s most likely to mean swapping a public holiday and we’d like to hear from Territorians about which one they think should move.

“This year, Territorians can celebrate Territory Day at a range of fantastic free public events across the Territory proudly supported by the Giles Government.”
The anniversary of Self Government will be marked with the traditional flag raising and citizenship ceremony at Parliament House.

In the evening, the Government is also supporting fireworks displays in 13 locations across the Territory, coordinated by Howard & Sons Pyrotechnics. A full list of events is available on the Territory Day website.

“The largest of these displays is being held at Darwin’s Mindil Beach with the assistance of the City of Darwin. A crowd of about 8000 people is expected to attend,” Mr Giles said.
“This year’s event will feature entertainment for the whole family between 5pm to 9pm including a skydiving display and spectacular fireworks at 7.30pm.

“Mindil Beach is a family-friendly venue and an exclusion zone will be set up where no private fireworks will be allowed.”
Mindil Beach Markets will be open for food and refreshments and 104.1FM radio will be broadcasting live from the beach throughout the night.

A shuttle bus service will be operating from Mindil Beach to the Darwin bus interchange from 5-9.30pm.

In Alice Springs, Territorians can celebrate at the family friendly public fireworks display at Anzac Oval. Bring a picnic along and enjoy the show from 7pm.

Territorians can privately purchase fireworks between 9am and 9pm on July 1 and set them off from 6pm to 11pm.

“Setting off fireworks is a Territory tradition and my message to the public is enjoy your crackers but please do it responsibly and within the rules. Above all, be safe and respectful of others,” Mr Giles said.

“This year, the Territory Government has moved to address noise complaints by banning the sale of so-called ‘Salutes’ and other fireworks with a sound level of more than 115 decibels.

“We hope the banning of the noisiest fireworks will decrease disruption in the community and upset for pets.
“I hope everyone has a great Territory Day. We have a lot to be proud of and this is our chance to celebrate.”
