No threat from Ebola says South Africa tourism

South-Africa-tourismThe South African communication minister stated there is no threat from Ebola in South Africa which still remains the destination of choice for tourists.

No cases have been reported of Ebola contamination in South Africa said Communications Minister Faith Muthambi.

The minister was alarmed as she read in a newspaper that people were cancelling their trips to South Africa in fear of catching the Ebola Virus.

At least 1500 tourists from Thailand had cancelled their trips from August to September.

She assured that the reports are based on erroneous facts and should not be relied on.

Countries in West Africa have been affected with the virus with death toll reaching 1145. In this year Liberia has recorded the highest death toll according to the Agence France-Presse news agency.

With 413 deaths recorded the numbers have exceeded Sierra Leone and Guinea, the epicentre of the epidemic.

Being a much sought after destination and attracting a wealth of tourists South Africa is showing a much more dynamic and positive growth rate from 2013 from leisure and business travellers.

At this juncture South Africa cannot afford such negative publicity which will directly hit its tourism inflow.

Stringent measures are being taken with safety checks at ports of entry to avoid any risk of the epidemic from entering South Africa.
