Tiger Roars Back Into The Territory

Minister for Tourism and Major Events, Matt Conlan, has welcomed today’s announcement that Tiger Airways will be resuming flights to the Northern Territory.

Mr Conlan said from April 9th this year, Tiger Airways will fly four times a week from Melbourne to Alice Springs in addition to a new four times a week service from Sydney to Alice Springs.

“This is simply fantastic news for the Territory and particularly for the Centre,” Mr Conlan said.

“The new service from Sydney to Alice Springs is especially exciting.

“The flights are perfectly timed to begin just as the new tourist season is firing up and is expected to bring an additional 150,000 new seats into the Territory.

“150,000 extra seats is just extraordinary. It’s just the boost local tourism operators need and will provide them some welcome relief.

“Today’s announcement from Tiger follows months of ongoing negotiations and discussions between Tiger Airways and the Northern Territory Government, Tourism NT and Alice Springs Airport.

“But, the people of Alice Springs have also played a large part in Tiger’s decision with hundreds voting on Tiger Airways online poll last year to determine ‘where they should fly to next’.

“Alice Springs residents should be proud that their votes, which led to Alice winning that poll, have resulted in not one but two new routes into the Territory that will have substantial flow on effect for our economy.”

Tourism NT CEO, Tony Mayell, said “We’ll be looking at how to best integrate Tiger into our marketing much like we have with Qantas Holidays, Virgin Australia, Jetstar and most recently Flight Centre.”

“Tiger’s return provides even more reasons for Australian holidaymakers to do something different, something new and tick the Icons of the Red Centre off their bucket list.”
