Traffic Results of Austrian Airlines for October 2013: More Passengers and Fuller Aircraft

Austrian-AirlinesThe Austrian Airlines Group carried about 1.04 million passengers in October, corresponding to a rise of 0.9 percent. The offering measured in available seat kilometers (ASK) was 3.7 percent higher than in the previous year, whereas revenue passenger kilometers (RPK) were up by 5.0 percent. Capacity utilization (passenger load factor) improved overall by 1.0 percentage point from the prior-year level to 80 percent.

In the period January to October 2013, Austrian Airlines carried approximately 9.6 million passengers, a decline of 1.5 percent year-on-year. The reason for this development is a targeted 3.7 percent reduction of capacity during this period. Within the context of a fleet harmonization program, the domestic airline streamlined its fleet by up to five medium-haul aircraft. In addition, up to two long-haul aircraft were taken out of service in the period January to October 2013 to equip them with the new cabin. Revenue passenger kilometers (RPK) were down by 2.3 percent. Capacity utilization (passenger load factor) improved overall by 1.1 percentage points from the previous year to 78.9 percent.

“In October we further increased our capacity utilization. In particular, our long-haul routes developed excellently. The long-haul cabins have been very well-received by our customers”, states Karsten Benz, Chief Commercial Officer of Austrian Airlines.

Europe
In October 2013, a total of 885,800 passengers flew with Austrian Airlines in Europe. This comprises a rise of 0.4 percent compared to the previous year. The passenger load factor declined by 0.2 percentage points to 77.6 percent. In the period January to October 2013, Austrian Airlines carried about 8.3 million passengers in Europe, corresponding to a decline of 0.8 percent. In contrast, the passenger load factor during this period rose by 1.6 percentage points to 77.4 percent.

Intercontinental
In October 2013, the number of passengers carried on intercontinental flights operated by Austrian Airlines increased by 3.7 percent from the previous year. On balance, a total of 151,900 passengers were carried by Austrian Airlines on its intercontinental flights in the month of October 2013. The passenger load factor was up by 2.0 percentage points to 82.2 percent.

In the period January to October 2013, Austrian Airlines carried a total of approximately 1.4 million passengers on its intercontinental flights, a drop of 5.8 percent from the prior-year level. The passenger load factor climbed 0.6 percentage points to 80.5 percent.
