Tropical storm Elida formed off Mexico’s Pacific coast ; heavy rains predicted

elidaTropical Storm Elida, the fifth named storm of the eastern Pacific hurricane season, has formed about 120 miles south of Manzanillo, Mexico causing strong winds and heavy rain across the country’s western and central states.

Tropical storm-force winds will expand along the Mexican Pacific coast, generally within the tropical storm warning area. Some parts of southwest Mexico may pick up over 6 inches of total rainfall over the next several days, leading to local flash flooding and mudslides.

The slow-moving tropical cyclones would impact with heavy rain as the storm is not expected to strengthen much over the next two days.

Elida would likely change course and move toward the west-southwest through Wednesday, staying near but off the coast of southwestern Mexico as forecasted by the Hurricane Center.

Elida was expected to dump 3 to 6 inches (8 to 15 centimeters) of rain over western portions of the Mexican states of Colima and Michoacan and over the southwest portion of Jalisco, with a maximum of 8 inches (20 centimeters) in some of those areas.

The storm also was generating heavy ocean swells that the center said are likely to cause life-threatening surf and rip currents.

Mexico was battered last year by dual storms Ingrid and Manuel, whose unprecedented rains killed over 150 people.
