TTF – Barangaroo Must Plan For Ferry Future

ttfA new ferry wharf at Barangaroo must accommodate both private and public ferry operators to ensure the best possible customer service experience for locals and visitors and to provide the capacity to deal with future demand, according to peak national industry body Tourism & Transport Forum (TTF).

TTF Deputy Chief Executive Trent Zimmerman said the new ferry hub at Barangaroo will help alleviate capacity pressures at Circular Quay and improve transport options to the new precinct and the city in general.

“Ferry services will play a key role in servicing Barangaroo, which is expected to accommodate 30,000 workers and 2500 residents and we welcome the government’s announcement to seek tenders for the project with the intention of having the new wharves operational by 2016,” said Mr Zimmerman.

“In addition to the demand generated by workers and residents, the transport network will also need to cater for an estimated 33,000 daily visitors to Barangaroo.

“By providing additional capacity at Barangaroo, some city-bound ferry services can be spread across to this new site which will connect customers to the rest of the CBD via the Wynyard Walk.

“With limited parking, public transport is expected to cater for most of the growing demand in the area and while Wynyard station and Wynyard Walk will be the main enablers, ferry services will be crucial to meet the needs of commuters and visitors alike.

“As well as serving new development on the western side of the CBD, the Barangaroo ferry hub will alleviate capacity pressures at Circular Quay.

“While Barangaroo will be a pivotal wharf in the Sydney Ferries network, the new infrastructure must also cater for private ferry operators.

“It is not clear whether the government intends to include a common user wharf – it would be a mistake to build the hub without space for other operators and room to grow.

“Given the scale of Barangaroo, the proposed integrated resort, and existing constraints at Circular Quay, at least two berths should be available for charter vessels and for private ferry operators.

“Planning to alleviate capacity pressures and welcome private operators will ensure this new ferry hub can service both Barangaroo and the wider city.”
