TTF – Better Coordination Key To Better Harbour Planning

ttf (2)Better coordination of planning and land management around Sydney Harbour is vital to protect public access and enhance one of Australia’s most important tourist assets, according to peak national industry body Tourism & Transport Forum (TTF).

TTF Acting Chief Executive Trent Zimmerman said the establishment of the Wielinga Committee offers a new opportunity to overcome years of turf wars that have held back the harbour’s potential.

“It is essential that Les Wielinga receives strong political and public service support if this new phase of harbour planning is to succeed,” Mr Zimmerman said.

“As a starting point, we urge the government and the new high-level committee to focus on improving Circular Quay and to build on the work of the Sydney Harbour Foreshore Authority.

“Nowhere in Sydney is there a precinct more important to our international image and nowhere is there an area with more government agencies seeking to oversee its management.

“The result is an international gateway to Sydney that lacks a coordinated vision and plan to make it a precinct that we can be truly proud of.

“We need all state government agencies and the City of Sydney Council to work with the Wielinga Committee to improve the appearance and functionality of a precinct that hosts millions of domestic and international tourists every year.”

Mr Zimmerman said bringing together government agencies was also crucial to other parts of the harbour that are undergoing a transformation.

“With Barangaroo well underway, the city will pivot to the western harbour and this will be reinforced by the planning process the government has launched for the Bays Precinct,” Mr Zimmerman said.

“Les Wielinga will bring to this role and to the Sydney Harbour Foreshore Authority incredible experience in government and his appointment is a smart choice.

“He will, however, need all the arms of government to work in genuine partnership if Sydney Harbour is to have the visitor precincts and amenity needed to reach its full potential.”
